History
In ancient times Zhangjiajie was known as remote and inaccesible. The history of Zhangjiajie started at the Neolithic Age when it was still called Dayong. Like other places in China a legend has been developed by ancient people like it always has. It was said that Zhang Liang a famuos strategist of the Western Han Dynasty lived here after leaving the court. He lived in fear he would be killed by Liu Bang the first emperor of the Han Dynasty who had orderred some of his people to be executed since he thought they might rebel against him. Zhang found Qingyan Mountain now Zhangjiajie. It was said he planted seven ginkgo trees here. He was buried below Qingyan Mountain now known as Zhangjiajie. Zhang is to Zhang Liang's surnamne while Jia means family and Jie means homeland.

- 1369: Dayong (now knonw as Zhangjiajie) was found in the Ming Dynasty.
- 1982: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park became the China's first national forest park.
- 1994: The city's name was chanmged from Dayong to Zhangjiajie
- 2010: The park inspired the movie Avatar
